FRANCO CORDERO, Lila. Sustainable mobility in university campus: a comparison between best practices in United States and Europe. Applicability in venezuelan universities. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2014, vol.29, n.2, pp.23-40. ISSN 0798-4065.
The purpose of this article is to compare the sustainable mobility best practices implemented in recent years in several university campuses of the United States and Europe, based on a literature review, with the aim of considering their possible application in the Venezuelan context. The sustainable mobility best practices are either strategies or initiatives oriented towards reducing congestion, enhancing mobility options and increasing campus accessibility, and they could be applied in other campuses. The similarities between United States and Europe are referred to the categories of collaborative planning, safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists, transit improvements, parking and carpool & vanpool programs. Differences detected in the United States universities were related to the use of transport intelligent systems to inform the public transit users, as well as the parking management. In contrast, for Europe the literature does not consider if there is some advance in these matters. It is not either reported the use of simulation models during the traffic and transport operations planning process in the European campuses. The set of the sustainable mobility best practices compiled in the United States and Europe that could be applied in the Venezuelan public universities are related to collaborative planning, pedestrian safety, transit, parking and carpool & vanpool programs. It is required that Venezuelan public universities develop their sustainable mobility planning role along with the national and local government levels.
