NAVAS, Rafael; ARTIGAS, Jacinto y CARDENAS, Pedro. Rainfall estimation by radar in Tacagua basin. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.1, pp.59-70. ISSN 0798-4065.
This paper aims to define a methodology to estimate areal rainfall using weather radar data. The studied area is located in Tacagua River Basin (103.9 Km2) which is monitored by 18 rain gauges network and the Jeremba weather radar placed at 2,422 masl. The methodology correlates rainfall records on the ground with radar reflectivity obtained from CAPPI of 2.500-3.500, 3.500-4.500, 4.500-6.000 masl, and cells of 1x1 km. Then, in order to try to generate a better estimation of rainfall by radar the translation component of the storm is included and we make the analysis of the horizontal movements of the storm. From the analysis, the better correlation between the pair of values of precipitation and reflectivity of the group of neighboring cells to each gage is selected. After the inclusion of the horizontal movements of the storm, a better relationship between weather radar data with measured precipitation on the ground is obtained. The method proposed in this paper achieves a better estimation of rainfall by radar.
