Abstract

Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) is a calcium phosphate with Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 formula, similar to the mineral component of vertebrates bones tissues which has been used as a replacement of bone sections, filling cavities in dentistry, metal surface coating for implants, composite reinforcement and drug-eluting. In this research, three HA samples were summited at 1350 °C heat treatment and then to a chemical, physical and ceramic characterization. Those samples were a non-commercial one synthesized by aqueous precipitation method (HA1), and two commercial products, synthesized by hydrothermal method (HA2) and spray pyrolysis (HA3), respectively. Samples characterization was performed by density measurements, specific surface, shrinkage percentage, FTIR spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (DRX) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that after thermic treatment, HA1 increases its density, decreases its specific surface, eliminates adsorbed water and carbonate ions, and increases its crystallinity and has porous morphology as well as rougher surface similar to commercial products HA2 and HA3 which do not undergo significant changes with heat treatment.
