CONTRERAS G, Roberto A; QUINTERO G, Franklin; ROSALES A, Sergio D y GONZALEZ, José M. Development of an open source software to determine the distribution of particle diameters in disperse systems through image. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.3, pp.7-16. ISSN 0798-4065.
A computer program for determining the distribution of particle diameter in liquid-liquid and solid-liquid dispersions using image processing was developed and implemented. This computational tool allows to study the stability of emulsions over time and to identify the type of surfactant additives that can be used to stabilize disperse systems. The results generated by the program were validated through comparison with the particle diameter distributions of micrographs reported in the literature and images of known diameter size. The program saves time and avoids the possibility of human error in comparison to manual determination of diameter size distribution of droplets in cases of W/O emulsions with opaque outer phase. Results are completed with statistical models. Another potential application is the identification of surfactant type additives that improve the dispersion of solid particles in grout cement in petroleum well construction.
