DI LISCIA, Marcelo; DE STEFANO, Andrés  e  DIAZ, Sergio. A gas foil bearing design. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.3, pp.63-76. ISSN 0798-4065.

The use of a compressible fluid in hydrodynamic lubrication provides a series of advantages, like reaching high speeds with low friction, sealing elimination and lubricant stability in a wide temperature range. When radial gas bearings are used, the thin lubricant film thickness, the strict manufacturing tolerances and the limited operating range all need to be taken into consideration. Gas Foil Bearings (GFB) consist of a surface composed by a thin foil (top-foil) lying over corrugated foils (bump-foils) which acts as springs to the loads to which the bearing is subjected. This work presents the design of a bump type GFB based on a finite element model to determine the bearing structural characteristics and from the model establish design parameters comparing it with a bearing of known properties. This is a proposal to the construction of a flexible foil bearing at the Machine Dynamics Laboratory at the Simón Bolívar University.
