Resumen

MARTINEZ MEUCCI, Miguel Ángel. Totalitarism: a current concept?. EPISTEME [online]. 2011, vol.31, n.2, pp.45-78. ISSN 0798-4324.

The concept of “totalitarianism” has both supporters and detractors. Its controversial nature comes from its ability to consider both Nazism and Communism as equivalents, as susceptible of being categorized in a same concept, something unacceptable to its critics. According to them, the idea of “totalitarianism” is nothing but an ideological formulation, massively used the same level of Nazism. On the other hand, many denounce as an anachronism or as something completely inappropriate the habit of calling “totalitarian” or “totalitarian-leaning” several contemporary regimes and political practices. This essay intends to explore the nature and pertinence of this debate, as well as to establish some elements in order to argue that the concept of “totalitarianism” is not merely ideological, but a useful notion to comprehend the 20th Century and several political dynamics of our time.

Palabras clave : totalitarianism; Mass-Man; Net-Man.
