The main objective of this article is to discuss the prototype citizen in democratic societies and the proper way of teaching him/her democratic values. The central point of the discussion will be focused on the citizen participation in social life, especially in such societies which do not promote the development of comprehensive and critical thinking ability in their citizens. The article surveys a variety of reasons, whether political or pedagogical, which support the need to raise again a reflection on civic education.
