FERNANDEZ MORENO, Luis. An examination of two Kripkean theses. EPISTEME [online]. 2015, vol.35, n.1, pp.47-65. ISSN 0798-4324.
Kripke asserts that natural kind terms are rigid designators and that they appear in theoretical identities, a sort of statements that are necessary if true. My aim in this paper is to examine these two Kripkean theses. Firstly, I will contend that it can be held that natural kind terms are rigid designators, their referents being universals. Secondly, I will argue that this conception of the reference of natural kind terms hinders the establishment of the truth and hence of the necessity of theoretical identities. Thirdly, I will dispute some of Kripkes claims, of a metaphysical nature, which would support the necessity of theoretical identities.
