SARMIENTO, Gustavo. Cartesianism, newtonianism and method: about rejection of cartesinism in John Keill’s work. EPISTEME [online]. 2016, vol.36, n.2, pp.173-198. ISSN 0798-4324.

Ananalysis of the work of Newton's early followers is essentialto a better understanding of some particular aspects of Newtonianism and its differences from Cartesianism. This is so because Newtonian physics was largely transmitted through the manuals of Newton’s followers such as John Keill, JT Desaguliers, Wm. J. 'sGravesande, William Whiston, or Henry Pemberton. These works played an important part in the triumph of Newtonian physics over Cartesianism. In this conference, the views of John Keillon the importance of mathematics in natural philosophy will be examined, in particular his criticism of the Cartesian point of view, as it is set forth in his Introductio ad Veram Physicam and his An Examination of Dr. Burnet's Theory of the Earth of 1698. This will allow us to contrast the perspective of Newtonianism with that of Cartesianism in order to contribute to a more informed discussion of the history of the modern view on the role of mathematics in natural philosophy. Secondly, we will examine Keill's criticisms of the postulates of Cartesian natural philosophy, which are intertwined with his objections to the role of mathematics in Cartesianism. Finally, Keill's critique of the Cartesian doctrine of vortices will be discussed.
