DIAZ DE RAMIREZ, Adelina; RAMIREZ-IGLESIA, Lilido N; HERNANDEZ SALAS, Olga y MONTILLA, Noraima. Cryptosporidium sp. in neonatal calves, in dairy and dual-purpose herds in Trujillo State, Venezuela. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2004, vol.22, n.2, pp.125-132. ISSN 0798-7269.
The presence of Cryptosporidium sp. and its association with diarrhea cases were determined in newborn calves from two cattle farms: one of double purpose (GDP) and another of dairy farm (GL). Fecal samples were collected from 99 calves, both male and female, with ages ranging from 2 to 30 days. The samples were processed by the NaCl centrifugal flotation method and staining with carbol-fuchsin. The results showed that excretion of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts was present in 43.1% of the calves from the GDP, and 65.8% those from the GL. The highest infection percentage corresponded to the age group from 15 to 21 days (GDP) reaching 75%, and the group from 8 to 14 days (GL), reaching 100%. Calves infected with Cryptosporidium had a significantly higher percentage of diarrhea (52% at GDP and 77.8% at GL) than non-infected calves (21.2% at GDP and 14.3% at GL) (P<0.05). Only the age groups from 2 to 7 days, and from 8 to 14 days revealed significant association between Cryptosporidium occurrence and diarrhea. These results show a high percentage of infection with Cryptosporidium sp. occurring in newborn calves, and suggest that the parasite might have clinical significance.
