SIVOLI, Lilliam; MICHELANGELI, Coromoto e MENDEZ, Adriana. Efecto combinado de la deshidratación en doble tambor y del tostado sobre la Energía Metabolizable Verdadera y factores antinutricionales de harinas de Canavalia ensiformis. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2004, vol.22, n.3, pp.241-250. ISSN 0798-7269.
The combination of two technological processes (dehydrating in double drum and toasting) was evaluated to determine the metabolizable true energy adjusted to zero nitrogen balance (TMEn) of seeds meal of Canavalia ensiformis. The raw meal was mixed with water in a ratio of 1:1.5(w/v) and then dried in a double drum dehydrator at 125ºC. The dried samples were toasted at 180ºC, and 200ºC for two minutes. A balance trial was conducted employing eight adult Rhode Island Red cockerels for each dietary flour, including a no treated flour. Each rooster was intubated with 30g of each sample directly into the crop and the feces were collected during 72 hours. The results indicated that drying treatments abolished the hemaglutinating activity and decreased the canavanina content in the raw seeds in 21 and 33% at 180 and 200ºC, respectively. The TMEn value increased to 2,400 ± 18 and 2,536 ± 46 kcal/kg in comparison with the values of non-treated seeds (2,177 ± 79 kcal/kg). These results support the potential of these two drying technologies for processing Canavalia ensiformis seeds prior to its use in commercial poultry diets.
