CENTENO, Luisa et al. Haematological characteristics of the cachama (Colossoma macropomum) in three phases of growth in Delta Amacuro state, Venezuela. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.4, pp.237-243. ISSN 0798-7269.
In order to determine the hematological characteristics that could be used to diagnose the health condition, there were examined 30 specimens of cachama of each one of this categories: breeder, juvenile and alevins; respectively, kept up in conditions of captivity, in lagoons of the Experimental Station of Delta Amacuro. For the hematologic analysis, the samples from juvenile and breeders were taken through puncture of the caudal vein, and those from the alevins were taken through cuts of the caudal peduncle. There were determined the values of hematocrite, hemoglobin, the recount of erythrocytes and leukocytes; and also were calculated the hematimetric indexs: medium corpuscular volume, medium corpuscular hemoglobin and concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin .The analysis and interpretation of the results were realized by descriptive statistics, and the comparison between the quantified variables in the blood by the test of t-student, between the categories of size of the studied specie. The test of t showed differences for the hematocrite and hemoglobin variables between alevins-juvenil and alevins- breeders, but there were not differences between juvenile and breeders. There were not found differences for the variavel concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin. The values of hemoglobin and hematocrite for alevins ranged between 28.58-31.16 and 9.51-10.37 g/dL, respectively, whereas the values for juveniles ranged between 30.70-32.84% and 10.77-12.15 g/dL. The values for breeder ranged between 30.66-36.74% and 10.77-12.15 g/dL. For the juvenile and adults of cachama, in the conditions of captivity, the index of concentration of the medium corpuscular hemoglobin presented itself as a characteristic of great reliability for the condition of blood quality. Their values were between 33.27 and 33.34 g/dL. The obtained results allow to visualize the potential use of the values of the hematocrite, hemoglobin and concentration of medium corpuscular hemoglobin as indicators of the corporeal condition of alevins, juvenile and adults of cachama in lagoon conditions.
