SULBARAN, Luis; ARAQUE, Humberto; VECCHIONACCE, Hiram  y  GONZALEZ, Carlos. Foot damages in pregnant and lactating sows housed in four types of facilities. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.4, pp.279-283. ISSN 0798-7269.

The study was carried out at the Faculty de Agronomy of Universidad Central de Venezuela. There were evaluated 88 gilts of the Camborough 22 genetic line during the gestation and lactation, which were maintained individually in four types of lodgings: cages with solid floor, corrals with solid concrete floor, deep bedding, and field that constituted the treatments. The evaluation was made every 15 days (September to March) by 14 weeks. The degree of damage was measured with a scale of measurement from 1 to 5, being 1 the worst and 5 the best. The results were added to obtain another scale from 1 to 20, in which different analyses were made. In order to measure the effect of treatment and week of evaluation, a variance analysis was made following a multinomial distribution. The sows maintained in corrals with concrete floor and cages with solid floor presented the highest values of damages in the helmets (50.6 and 43.3%, respectively), in comparison to the females lodged in field and deep bedding (P<0.05). The damage on the helmets considered as severe did not appear in any of the treatments (P>0.05); the slight damage showed a probability of occurrence of 3.1% in all the lodgings (P<0.05), whereas the damage called as excellent was 59.3% (P<0.05). It is concluded that sows lodged in corrals with concrete floor and cages with solid floor suffered more damages in the helmets that the sows lodged in deep bedding and field, but with lower degree of affectation in all the cases

Palabras clave : Foot damages; pregnant and nursing sows; types of lodgings.
