SHIGUEKI YASUI, George et al. Masculinization in three strains of Nile tilapia using the synthetic androgen 17-á-methyl-testosterone. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.4, pp.307-310. ISSN 0798-7269.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the masculinization of post-fry in three strains of Nile tilapia: thai strain 1 (TS-1), thai strain 2 (TS-2), and local strain (LS). Fishes were fed using a ration containing 60 mg of 17-á-methyiltestosterone/kg for 28 days, and biometric parameters were obtained at 7-days intervals. Later, it was observed the percentage of males and mortality. There was no significant differences on growth and male percentage (97.1±1.4%, 98.10±2.1%, 99.05±0.8% for TS-1, TS-2, and LS, respectively), although the mortality was higher for LS (52.8±7,5%) when compared to LT-1 (20.8±2.6%) and LS-2 (20.8±3.6%). These data suggest the utilization of LT-1 e LT-2.
