Abstract
MARTINEZ SAEZ, Silvio J et al. Use of PEG400 to assess the influence of polyphenols on in vitro gas production with bovine feces as inoculum. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.3, pp.261-264. ISSN 0798-7269.
In the search of analytical techniques to achieve reliable results in assessing animal feed raw materials and/or forages, in vitro gas production using bovine feces can be a selected procedure to predict digestibility, without any aggression to the animals. Applying such technique, samples of Chamaecrista lineada, Desmodium barbatum, Desmodium incanum, Dichrostachys cinerea, Leucaena leucocephala, and Stylosanthes viscosa were evaluated. The correlation between the influence of PEG4000 on gas production and the concentration of extractable polyphenols was evaluated. The addition of PEG significantly (P<0.01) improved in vitro gas production (mL/200 mg DM) of Ch. lineada (8.5 to 12.3), D. cirenea (17.3 to 27.1), and L. leucocephala (16.8 to 20.0). In the evaluated legumes, there was a positive correlation (r2 = 0.94) between the improvement in gas production because of PEG and the concentration of polyphenols.
