Abstract

VILLARREAL ESPINO-BARROS, Oscar A et al. Evaluation of the units of management and wildlife conservation for white tailed deer in the Mixteca region, México. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.3, pp.395-398. ISSN 0798-7269.

The pressure-state-response framework was used for the socioeconomic and environmental evaluation of the units for management and wildlife conservation (UMWC) of the white tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, by a technological model denominated diversified livestocking, in the mountainous and semiarid, poor and insolated region denominated Mixteca, in the south of Puebla state, México. The diversified livestocking is an agro-forestry system that combines the extensive use of beef cattle, with the sustainable use of the white tailed deer, other wildlife species and their habitat in the hunting game and ecotourism. The sustainable use of the deer in this model indicates important socioeconomics benefits for the cattlemen and its positive effects for the natural resources, in 72 UMWC with more than 72.000 ha. The results of the analysis showed that this methodology is adequate to evaluate the regional development and its environmental, economic, and social benefits. We recommended using this methodological analysis in other Mexican stockbreeding.
