Resumen
GRANDE-CANO, Jesús D et al. Agroforestry education in the agricultural academic programs in Mexico. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.3, pp.407-409. ISSN 0798-7269.
In Mexico, agroforestry is practiced in several regions and presents different development stages, where the research started just a few twenty years ago and its formal teaching in the educational institutions is still more recent. The objective of this paper was to describe the present situation of the agroforestry education by the analysis of the agricultural academic programs. It was found 52 agroforestry subjects, in 14 B.S. and 25 academic programs in 15 universities. Most of the subjects (83%) belong to the Agronomy career; however, based on the number of B.S. offered, Forestry Sciences have 60% of B.S. and 75% of the academic programs. The major part (65%) of the agroforestry subjects are obligatory and 35% optional. Only 17 (33%) of the agroforestry subjects are related with livestock agroforestry, 24 (46%) are introductory or general agroforestry subjects, and finally 11 (21%) are related with some other agroforestry themes. We can conclude that the agroforestry education in Mexico has a few interests in the academic programs of the agricultural B.S. which are offered at the present time.
