KORBUT, Nicolás; OJEDA, Álvaro y MUNOZ, Dorian. Evaluation of bromatological profile and some physical parameters of trees and shrubs foliage species consumed by cattle in silvopastoril conditions at a tropical semideciduous dry forest. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2009, vol.27, n.1, pp.065-072. ISSN 0798-7269.
In order to evaluate some chemical and physical parameters of foliage of six trees and shrubs with forage value for cattle (Coccoloba sp., Guazuma ulmifolia, Inga sp., Machaerium sp., Samanea saman y Senna pallida) located in a tropical semideciduous dry forest located in Portuguesa state, Venezuela were collected monthly samples during dry season. Samples corresponded to the edible fraction of plants consumed by 10 cattle Bos taurus x Bos indicus (390.4 kg LW) in silvopastoril conditions. For the species considered (16.0% CP, 51.4% NDF, 1.8% Ca, and 0.1% P), the particle density (0.26 g MS/mL), particle size (0.31 mm), water holding capacity (3.2 mL/g MS), organic matter (11.3%) and mineral (53.9%) solubilisation were within the literature range for fibrous material, with an important variation among species (P<0.01) related to the cellular wall contend and the chemical composition of foliage evaluated. Together with others strategies of chemical and biological valuation, the systematization of this information could contribute to establish the relationship between passage and degradation rates of these resources, and consequently, between intake and fibrous materials utilization in silvopastoril systems with ruminants.
