In vivo production of murine embryos is a biotechnology practice widely influenced by a series of variables such as dose and type of hormone for superovulation, strain and level of nutrition of the donor, among others. These factors can affect the efficiency of the system. Therefore, knowing and controlling most of these factors would allow obtaining a higher number of excellent quality embryos at a very low cost in a shorter period of time. With the aim to evaluate the effect of the donor weight at the beginning of the superovulation protocol on the recovery rate, 54 female mice were divided according to their weight in five categories: 12.2 - 14.9, 15.0 - 17.6, 17.7 - 20.3, 20.4 - 23.0, and 23.1 - 25.8 g. A total of 940 embryos were collected, which showed a weight effect (P<0.05) of the donor on the number of embryos recovered. Female mice with weight between 17.7 to 20.3 g had the highest recovery rate, with 10.4 and 6.0 morulae and blastocysts/donor, respectively. These results indicate the importance of considering the weight of the murine donor female before hormonal superovulation protocol in an in vivo production system of embryos.
