PINILLA LEON, Juan C. Prevalence of Isospora suis in swine intensive herds located in Aragua state, Venezuela. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2009, vol.27, n.2, pp.205-213. ISSN 0798-7269.
It was carried out a research in Aragua state with the aim of evaluating the prevalence of Isospora suis in intensive swine herds. For the study, five municipalities of the state (40%) were randomly selected and all farms were visited, from where samples were collected in proportion to the quantity of animals and age groups. For parasitic determination, 1.000 fecal samples were collected directly from the rectum in litters, nurslings and gestating sows, replacement gilts, and hogs, as well as, samples taken from the floor in starting, growing, and finishing pigs. From each herd a survey was applied to collect information about sows quantity, pens floor, and use of anticoccidials. The results of this study indicated that I. suis was present in litters of four municipalities, as well 75% of prevalence in farms and 31.9% in litters, with the biggest prevalence values in the first two weeks of life (P<0.05). Also, statistical associations were determined among parition number and prevalence values in litters and lactating sows (P<0.05), that indicate that as parity increse, prevalence decrease in litters and sows. With regard to herd size. there were no statistical differences among the three types of size (P>0.05); however, piglets raised in plastic pens had the lowest prevalence (P<0.05). It is concluded that I. suis is broadly distributed in the studied area and it could be controlled improving sanitary herds conditions and equally it should take into account the presence of I. suis in other age groups, as well as, the parity sows and pens floor type, in the control programs of these parasite.
