SANDOVAL, Espartaco et al. Efficacy of albendazol incorporated in a urea molasses block on the fecal egg counts of gastrointestinal nematodes and body weight in sheep under intensive conditions. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2009, vol.27, n.3, pp.309-314. ISSN 0798-7269.
In order to evaluate the efficacy of albendazol incorporated in a urea molassess blocks (UMB) a trial was carried out in 19 West African cross breed sheep with a weight average of 16.5 kg and 11 months old, reared under pen conditions and fed with cut grass (Pannicun maximun) Animals were coprological examined weekly to determine its parasitic load, through the Mc Master technique, expressing the results as eggs per gram (epg) of feces. Animal weight gain was determined weekly. The parasitological data, previous logarithmic transformation and those corresponding to the weight gain were analyzed by mean of one-way variance analysis and for the separation of means the test of Bonferoni was used. Statistical differences were found in epg counts and live weight gain in the weeks when the animals were fed with and without UMB. During the experimental period the prevalence oscillated from 95 to 10.5%. It was observed a reduction of 94.8% in the epg counts after the administration of the UMB. It was concluded that addition of albendazol on the blocks resulted in a significant reduction of the eggs output and increment on the live weight gain. The effectiveness of this modality of treatment is recognized and it is recommended to carry out some trials to avoid the risk of development of antihelmintic resistance.
