ALDAMA-ROJAS, Guillermo et al. Socioeconomic characterization and fishing technique in micro dams dry tropics of Southern Mexico. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2011, vol.29, n.2, pp.195-203. ISSN 0798-7269.
The aim of this work was to study the socioeconomic characteristics of the communities associated with fish catches in micro-dams in the dry tropics southestern of Mexico. The work was conducted in the region between the Coatlán del Río y Tetecala de Reforma in the State of Morelos, Mexico. This region consists of seven locations where are located eleven small bodies of water with areas fluctuating from 1 to 10 hectares approximately. The method of the survey and semi-structured interviews was used with fishers and the community surrounding these water bodies. The variables included were social, technical and marketing. 190 interviews were applied and analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results indicated that community maintains a strength relationship with these water bodies; 90% are dedicated to livestock, 30% agriculture and 20% fishing. 48% of the interviewers are men and 52% female. In all microdams the extensive culture of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus and O. niloticus) is practiced as subsistence fishing. Among the main problems facing fisheries are water filtration and evaporation of the micro-dams, presence of predators, competition from exotic species such as devil fish (Pterygoplichthys sp.) and the lack of economic support and the limited technical advice and finally an organization emerging community
