Abstract

SUAREZ, A  and  RAMOS, Franky. Characterization of productive and reproductive performance in Buffaloes Buffalypso in Cuba. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2011, vol.29, n.4, pp.485-494. ISSN 0798-7269.

Six indicators of milk production and one of reproductive behavior were characterized in Buffalypso females, calved between 1996-2008, from 135 herds, 26 enterprises and 11 provinces of the country. The traits analyzed were: milk production up to 100 days of milking (L100), 200 days (L.200), 244 days (L.244), milk/day (LD), persistence of production (P2:1), lactation length, and calving intervals (IPP). The sources of variation analyzed with a general linear model were: herd (nested on enterprise and province), year and month of calving and the number of lactation. General adjusted means were: 396,95 ± 103,52 kg (L100); 730,22 ± 170,07 kg (L200); 868,92 ± 189,84 kg (L244); 3,35 ± 0,86 kg/día (LD); 56,67 ± 7,50 % (P2:1); 216,05 ± 49,77 days (DL) y 411,53 ± 148,51 days (IPP). All the sources of variation were highly signifi cant, except the calving month for IPP. The phenotypic correlations between accumulated productions were high and positive (0,90-0,99). The estimated repeatabilities were also high (0,41-0,58). The highest productions were obtained in general since the fourth calving, and during the months of calving among March-May, when the minor incidence of calving occurs, being associated the higher production with the least persistence. It is appreciated the recovering of milk production in the last years with a light increase in IPP and minors DL. The knowledge of repeatabilities permits its use for the culling of females
