Abstract

D´AUBETERRE, Ramón; PRINCIPAL, Judith; BARRIOS, Carlos  and  GRATEROL, Zaida. Insects pest in pods of Acacia tortuosa and Prosopis julifl ora used for animal feeding present in semiarid zone of Lara state, Venezuela. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.2, pp.147-153. ISSN 0798-7269.

This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the most abundant insect pests that cause damage in two leguminosae pods in nine villages in the townships Iribarren, Torres Jimenez Palavecino and semi-arid areas of Lara state. 200 pods were collected randomly from each legume species: Úbeda (A. tortuous) and Cují (P. julifl ora) in nine locations for a total of 3600 pods. The samples were collected in polyethylene bags and transported to the Center for Research and Production of Sheep and Goats of the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) Lara, then placing them into entomological cages, the number of pods damaged and insect pests present in the cages were recorded weekly for 45 days. The insects were identifi ed and classified to family and species by using stereoscopic lens, an optical microscope and corresponding identification keys, in the Laboratory of Apiculture of the Dean of Veterinary Science and the Laboratory of Entomology of the Dean of Agriculture, University Centroccidental “Lisandro Alvarado” UCLA. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a design of a nonparametric ANOVA (Kruskal Wallis). The identifi ed insects belong to the order Coleoptera, Bruchidae Family: Acanthoscelides obtectus and Callosobruchus maculatus; Family Anobiidae: Lasioderma serricorne. The percentage of damage recorded in the pods of A. tortuous ranged between 10.1% and 30.75%, while in P. julifl ora ranged between 3.42% and 24, 82% in the samples collected causing physical damage which suggest decrease in a nutritive quality of the seeds
