Abstract

OBANDO, Patricia; ALFARO, Mayra; HURTADO, Ernesto  and  RODRIGUEZ, Tomás. Reproductive performance of multiparous sows to the addition of Oxytocin and Prostaglandin F2 alfa previous to artifi cial insemination. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.2, pp.169-174. ISSN 0798-7269.

To evaluate the effect of the addition of oxytocin and prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) to the dose of semen before Artifi cial Insemination (AI) on the Conception Rate (CR), Farrowing Rate (FR) and Total Number of Piglets Born (TNPB), this study was conducted on a commercial full cycle farm located in the vicinity of Ciudad Ojeda, Zulia State. One hundred and sixty three multiparous crossbred sows, Landrace and Yorkshire were inseminated with semen of Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc boars, containing 4x109 sperm in a dose of 80mL. All the sows were inseminated through cervical artifi cial insemination (CAI). Sows were grouped at random in each of the following three treatments: T0: 54 sows without any additives to the insemination dose, T1: 54 sows, adding 5IU (0.25mL) of oxytocin to the insemination dose and T2: 55 sows that received 5mg (1mL) of PGF2α added to the insemination dose. The CAI was performed with refrigerated semen at 24, 36 and 48 h after estrus detection. Data for TNPB was analyzed by ANOVA, using the Proc GLM (SAS, 1998), and data for CR and FR were analyzed using Chi Square analysis. Average values for the dependent variables studied were: CR= 75.95; 79.62 and 74.54% for T0, T1 and T2, respectively, for FR= 74.07; 75.93 and 70.90% for T0, T1 and T2, respectively, and TNPB= 10.20 for T0; 10.10; for T1 and 10.03 for T2. There were no statistical differences among treatments for variables in the study. The best reproductive response in sows was obtained by adding 5IU of oxytocin previously to traditional insemination with cooled semen
