PEREZ, Alfredo; CASTILLO, Otto; BARBARINO, Aniello e FABRE, Nidia. Reproductive aspects of striped catfish Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) in Apure Basin, Venezuela. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.3, pp.251-262. ISSN 0798-7269.
The goal of this study was to assess the reproductive and fisheries aspects of Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum and their relationships with pulse inundation. The sexual development frequency, sexual proportion, sexual maturation mean length, sexual proportion and fecundity were analyzed. 1165 fishes were processed from tributaries of Apure River (highland) and from floodplain of Apure River (lowland) from 1996 to 2003. Using the gonadosomatic index it was determined that the reproduction period is from may to June, during rising waters in the main channel. The observation of fishes with advanced maturate gonads (state III and IV) showed that the reproduction is synchronic with the inundation pulse in the tributaries of Apure River, where the females were abundant. The absolute fecundity varies between 78.268-3.420.556 oocytes. In the tributaries (highland) the sexual mean length be lowing from 69.40 cm (in 1996) at 65.0 cm in 2002. Also relationship with overfishing aspects are discussed
