GUTIERREZ, María et al. Prevalence of Bovine Leptospirosis in northern sector of Manuel Monge municipality, Yaracuy state, August-September period of 2008. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.4, pp.327-334. ISSN 0798-7269.
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of bovine leptospirosis in the northern sector of the municipality Manuel Monge, Yaracuy state of Venezuela. 413 Bovines were selected in 18 farms using a random systematic sampling. Samples were processed by Living Antigen Antigen Microagglutination Test (MAT). Agglutination titles found were among 1:100 to 1:3200. The most frequent serovar were L. hardjo and L. hebdomadis. The leptospirosis prevalence was 38.7%, being the most prevalent serovars L. hardjo and L. hebdomadis (18.2% and 17.7% respectively). The highest prevalence by age group was L. hardjo resulting 29.6% in cows, 26.8% in heifers and 21.4% in calves, for L. hebdomadis the prevalence was 23.9% in cows, 20.7% in bulls and 19.5% in yearlings. In terms of production systems the higher prevalence serovars for dual purpose herds were L. hardjo with 14.0% and for beef farms was the serovar L. hardjo with 43.3%. According to sex, the higher prevalence in females was obtained for L. hardjo 26.2% with and L. hebdomadis with 19.9%. The chi2 test showed an association between the disease and the age group and sex factors (P<0.05). It was concluded that the prevalence of leptospirosis is moderate and is recommended that agencies establish prevention and control measures in the study area.
