Abstract

The aim of this work was the production of dry biomass of Spirulina maxima on a pilot scale batch cultures, as to stablish an average conversion from a wet to dry weight basis per volume of culture used. Growth of Spirulina maxima was made with the culture medium Zarrouk diluted in distilled water (25:75), starting in farming units of 1 L capacity, before being scaled up square tanks, increasing their volume with water, bicarbonate sodium to 20% and commercial fertilizer at 1 mL L-1. Cultures were kept covered with mesh in the 29 days until the harvest stage. The fresh biomass was collected by gravity fi ltration through a 40-micron sieve, placed in trays and dried at 50°C. A total of four harvests were conducted with a total volume of 550 L. culture, obtaining 2.5 kg. Spirulina maxima fl our, an average of 4.56 g/l-1 of dry biomass per liter of culture, demonstrating the potential of high and sustainable crop that this microalgae has. The proximal anlysis of this meal, show that the percentage of protein (33.90% / 100 g.) present in the composition is acceptable to be used as an alternative source in the nutrition of fi sh in order to produce animal protein.
