In Venezuela, the meat consumption is oriented mainly for poultry meat, followed by beef and pork, the latter with a very low power consumption compared to other countries. Therefore, the objective of this research was characterize the buying habits of consumption of fresh pork in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela. A descriptive research was conducted, non- experimental field 384 people formed the study sample, the survey was to collect information and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the percentage of people who consume fresh pork accounted for 53%, and these mostly men (54%) with a tertiary (61%), monthly family income above 2 minimum salaries (51%). In relation to consumption 42% do so once a month, the ribs are preferred parts (33%) in roasted form (57%). The taste is the main reason for consumption (58%), although they have the perception of being harmful to health (54%). The place of purchase is the predominant butcher (70%), the main reason is the proximity to their homes (54%), the color of the meat was the attribute greater importance at the time for purchase (51%). It is important to develop communication strategies as posters at points of sales or television commercials, in order to reverse the concept of harmful health food and encourage consumption as an alternative product for animal protein intake.
