In this article, I analyze a unique XIX century work: Manual de urbanidad y buenas maneras by Manuel Antonio Carreño, which consists of a collection of norms that modelled public and private life in Caracas society within the sociopolitical context of a modernizing process during those times. In the first part, I analyze the Manual as a type of discourse inserted and adjusted to XIX century Caracas society society. In the second part, I show the relationship between Carreño´s prescriptive norms and the basic ideas found in pragmatic theories. I take the concepts of positive and negative face and conversational maxims to reveal the structure of this sociopragmatic and ethnographic treatise of XIX century Venezuela.
