The purpose of this study is to determine the use of address forms in the XVIII century in Merida (Venezuela). The data consists of 33 letters found in the Protocol Disagreement, Marriage and Divorce taken from the State of Merida’s General Archives. Fifteen different writers participated in the exchanges regarding the case of the marriage between a slave and a free mulatto woman. Addressees and senders belonged to different social classes. Analysis reveals that: i) the familiar use of vos alternating with tú is still in use at the end of the XVIII century. ii) there is an alternation of the different ways of formal addressing - even within the same document: vuestra merced~usted~su merced
