The objective of this investigation is to verify the current usage of entries under the letter “A” of the Diccionario de venezolanismos (1983) (‘Dictionary of Venezuelanisms’). For this purpose, I examined how the words selected for this study were used in a sample consisting of 1203 texts. In the cases where a word could not be found in the sample, I conducted a survey to determine whether it was recognized by Caracas speakers (and in case it was recognized, whether the word was assigned the same meanings recorded in the dictionary). In addition, I also verified whether or not the words that are object of this investigation appear in the Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (2007) (‘Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy’), with the same meanings that the Diccionario de venezolanismos (1983) registers.
