JAIMEZ, Rita. Venezolanismo vs. Etnocentrismo. Boletin de lingüistica [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.34, pp.70-93. ISSN 0798-9709.
The purpose of this study is to determine how the Academia Real Española (RAE, Royal Spanish Academy) evaluates the Spanish variety spoken in Venezuela. Following moreno de Alba (1988), we reject Zamora´s (1967) and Lerner´s (1974) opinions, whereby they characterize the Spanish spoken in America as archaic. Using a contrastive methodology, we worked through the following phases: (i) Revision of the presence of some terms in various lexicographical works; (ii) Exploration of the treatment that Venezuelan terms received from the Academy; (iii) Examination of the basic principles on which the Academy based the selection of ismos (terms used in particular varieties), and (iv) Description of the dynamics of language and of the history of the Spanish language. The results indicate that the Academy uses ethnocentric criteria in characterizing Spanish varieties.
