This article analyzes the strategies for constructing the headlines of newspapers published in provinces. the study is based on Pottier (1992, 1993),Molero de Cabeza (1998, 2003), Molero y Cabeza (2006) and Franco (1998,2006, 2007). the results reveal that: a) the topic of murder is the thematic axis that dominates; b) the actors involved in the violent events are more prominent than the reasons or the purposes related to such events; c) the analysis of the semantic fields suggests that scant references to the agents mitigate their presence, whereas more explicit references, and the violent, and the use of generic terms, highlight the presence of the victims; d) the use of “decir” and “hacer” was the most common reference to the violence.
