Resumen
ZABALEGUI, Nerea. Construcciones a ver si, para ver si y por ver si. Boletin de lingüistica [online]. 2011, vol.23, n.35-36, pp.171-190. ISSN 0798-9709.
The meanings of the verb ver (to see) in the constructions a ver si, para ver si, and por ver si that depend on a verb are analyzed from a diachronic perspective. The purpose is to determine the characteristics of a ver si in comparison to the other two constructions, since the former is the only one that can be used in independent sentences as well. I make a distinction between three types of meaning, and three degrees of certainty: i) objective and high certainty; ii) objective-subjective and intermediate certainty; and iii) subjective and low certainty. I categorized the cases taken from the Corpus Diacrónico del Español (Spanish Diachronic Corpus, CORDE), according to the century in which the text was written as well as the type of meaning. The results show that: a) por ver si is primarily used until the XVII century; and b) the use of para ver si is related to the objective meaning, while a ver si is associated with objective-subjective and subjective meanings.
