Resumen

SHIRO, Martha. Y entonces le dijo…la representación del habla en las narraciones de niños venezolanos. Boletin de lingüistica [online]. 2012, vol.24, n.37-38, pp.119-143. ISSN 0798-9709.

Six to eleven year-old children´s ability to use reported speech is examined in this study, in order to determine how they construct character interaction in their oral narratives of fiction and personal experience. The results suggest that as children grow older, they use more reported speech. Direct report is the most common type of reporting and its most pervasive discursive function is evaluative. Fictional stories contain more reported speech than personal experience narratives. Boys use more reported speech than girls and the difference increases with age. Socioeconomic status (SES) also affects the use of reported speech, as higher SES children include more reporting in narratives than their low SES peers. The methodological and educational implications of these findings related to the development of discourse competence are discussed.

Palabras clave : reported speech; fictional and personal experience narratives; development of discourse competence.
