BOLIVAR, Adriana e GRINDSTED, Annette. Cognition in (inter)action: Negotiation of stereotypic beliefs in intercultural discourse. Núcleo [online]. 2005, vol.17, n.22, pp.63-83. ISSN 0798-9784.
The negotiation of stereotypic beliefs in intercultural discourse constitutes a relevant research topic from a cognitive point of view because this explains part of the process of the formation of stereotypes on cultural identity; and also from the perspective of the method used in order to obtain information on the stereotypes. The aim of this article is to show part of the results of an investigation in which we sustained that the semistructured interview to elicit stereotypes is more than a data collection method because the interview is a form of interaction in which the interlocutors negotiate categories, accept them or reject them and display their identities. We focus on the process of negotiation of stereotypes on work related issues in the context of two international companies where Danes and Latin American professionals work. The study is based on eight interviews of approximately fifty minutes each, three in Danish (to Danes) and five in Spanish (to Latin Americans). The analysis shows that interviewers and interviewees belonging to the same culture cooperate in order to construct the text and the stereotypic beliefs, as shown in the topics selected and in the resulting exchange structure.
