BERRIZBEITIA, Josefina. Intercambios con Sylvia Molloy y Julio Ramos: Dos deslindes teóricos en el campo de la Novela Decimonónica. Núcleo [online]. 2006, vol.18, n.23, pp.135-154. ISSN 0798-9784.
This article proposes a discussion with two critical texts on nineteenth century Latin-American literature. The first one is Sylvia Molloy´s Too Wilde for Comfort: Desire and Ideology in Fin-de Siècle Spanish America. Placing the discussion in the field of the novel, the category of decadence (Molloy) is extended to that of degeneration in order to include the diverse esthetic modalities of the period. The second text is Julio Ramos´ Desencuentros de la Modernidad en América Latina (Literatura y política en el siglo XIX). Again in terms of the novel, the purpose is to question his conception of the problematic status of literary modernity in Latin America and to emphasize instead the combinations and negotiations characteristic of Latin-American modernization, which makes heterogeneity and fragmentation its particular sign.
