D´AQUINO RUIZ, Giovanna. Twenty-six lexical meanings currently used in Venezuela: The first step towards the creation of a contrastive dictionary. Núcleo [online]. 2007, vol.19, n.24, pp.37-62. ISSN 0798-9784.

This work is part of an ongoing research study aimed at collecting words that are currently used in Venezuela and that have not been entered in general Spanish dictionaries, comparing it with the vocabulary used in 16 Spanish-speaking countries and checking if the collected words had already been entered with the same meanings in two large Venezuelan vocabulary dictionaries, namely the "Diccionario de venezolanismos" (DIV) and the "Diccionario del habla actual de Venezuela" (DHAV). The corpus used for this study included 21 entries (a total of 26 lexical meanings) documented by the "Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual" (CREA), the Internet and/or the testimonies of a small group of native speakers. It was verified if the selected words were also used in 16 Spanish-speaking countries through interviews to native speakers from each of them. All interviewees were members of the IV group of students from the RAE School of Hispanic Lexicography (2005). It was concluded that: i) eleven lexical meanings out of the proposed 26 are not shared by other countries, ii) only nine lexical meanings have not been entered in any of the two Venezuelan reference works; iii) the DIV has 14 of the 26 proposed lexical meanings, whereas the DHAV has sixteen; iv) Colombia is the country that shares the highest number of lexical meanings with Venezuela.

Palavras-chave : contrastive lexicon; differential dictionary; Venezuelan Spanish.
