This article describes and analyzes the predominant social representations related to reading and writing in the context of primary and secondary education in the city of Ibagué, Tolima-Colombia. This study can be considered exploratory and descriptive, since it inquired about the knowledge, beliefs, practices and values that 786 participating students assigned to these social practices. The results show the need to develop educational projects and intervention proposals with the objective of changing, in the long term, those representations, which have much impact on the students writing and reading practices.
