MEDINA ROA, Anderzon  e  DOMINGUEZ, Carmen Luisa. Serial Novels as a Discourse Genre. A Case Study: The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope. Núcleo [online]. 2009, vol.21, n.26, pp.201-224. ISSN 0798-9784.

This paper deals with The Way We Live Now (1874-1875), a serial novel by Anthony Trollope (London, 1815-1882). This documental approach has a twofold aim: on the one hand, it begins with a theoretical elaboration of what a discourse genre is; 19th century serials fit that definition, since they follow given parameters for their production and reception in a given place and time within a given culture. On the other hand, being a serial novel, The Way We Live Now is approached through its stories and the relationship established between the narrator and the reader, in order to reveal the author’s intention of satirizing his own society; in doing so, Trollope exerts a sort of moral authority with which respected writers were invested at the time the novel was published.

Palavras-chave : discourse genre; English literature; serial novel; Victorian England; Anthony Trollope.
