Resumen

ALVAREZ MURO, Alexandra. Politeness and Culture: Translating (Im)Politeness. Núcleo [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.27, pp.11-48. ISSN 0798-9784.

(Im)politeness is the result of an “incident” damaging the face both of the interlocutor as well as the own. Authors dealing with this issue (Brown & Levinson, 1987; Culpeper et al., 2003; Haverkate, 1994) coincide broadly in this idea. Now, when speaker and hearer belong to different nations and different languages, translation of discourses underlying oral or written texts, as well as attitudes and behaviours, becomes necessary in order to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings. This is the case of incidents between heads of state where norms are contravened, or facts are misinterpreted. This study focuses on the difficulties of interpreting (im)politeness issues from the point of view of both the offender and the offended.

Palabras clave : politeness; interculturality; translation.
