MIRA ALVAREZ, Germán Darío. The Translation of Deautomatized Phraseological Units in Rosario Tijeras. Núcleo [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.27, pp.217-237. ISSN 0798-9784.
The translation of phraseological units poses an additional challenge to the translator, due to their level of idiomaticity and their close relation to social, historical and cultural aspects of a linguistic community. The complexity in the translation of this kind of units increases when they are subject to creative manipulation in the original text (deautomatization), that is to say, when their individual components are modified or when semantic contrasts are created in which the literal and idiomatic levels of the unit are used simultaneously in order to highlight their expressivity. In this paper, we present a traductological and contrastive analysis of a corpus of eight deautomatized units -taken from the novel Rosario Tijeras- and their English translation, to determine how the resulting semantic and textual relationships in the original text are preserved in the target text. The analysis will allow us to draw criteria as to the adequacy of the translation of these units from a semantic and pragmatic perspective; at the same time, the findings can serve as reference criteria to make translation decisions when dealing with this type of units.
