Resumen

DOS SANTOS, Francisca Eugênia  y  ALVARADO, Esteban. Literary Translation and its Implications for the Construction of Culture. Núcleo [online]. 2012, vol.24, n.29, pp.217-245. ISSN 0798-9784.

We know that by means of the translation of literary works we build a bridge between nations and their cultures in the most remarkable aspects. We know as well that the translation of a text can be carried out only when the translator has a deep knowledge of the two languages and their cultures. However, we have noticed an increasing academic interest in the last decades regarding translation studies as a discipline. This concern has generated several theories which have emerged with the purpose of explaining and describing the act of translation as a complex cognitive process. In this article we aim to present some of the theoretical discussions about translation and the complexity of literary translation, which lies in the target culture. Our intention is to create a dialogue between the theories of translation and the daily work of translators, by means of the analysis of some translation units from the novel Esaú e Jacó, by Machado de Assis, which has been recently translated into Spanish in Chile.

Palabras clave : translation; literary translation; translation competence; discourse.
