MORLES, Armando; ARTEAGA, Marlene; BUSTAMANTE, Sonia e GARCIA, Mayra. Relationship between Venezuelan students performance in reading and writing. Rev. Ped [online]. 2002, vol.23, n.67, pp.225-246. ISSN 0798-9792.
ABSTRACT This study explores the possible relationship between reading and writing abilities, as well as characteristics of this relationship. To this end, answers were sought to the following questions: 1. Is there any relationship between Venezuelan students reading and writing performance? 2. Does this relationship have to do with the students` sex? 3. Does this relationship have to do with the students` socio-economic status? 4. Does it have to do with the students` reading performance? To answer these questions, scores on a reading comprehension test obtained by 452 nine-graders, ages between 14 and 17, were correlated with scores from written texts produced by the same students. The findings were: 1. There is not a significant relationship between student reading and writing abilities. 2. Sex does not seem to have any significant effect on this correlation. 3. Students socio-economic status has a slight effect on this correlation and 4. Student reading comprehension performance has a slight effect on this correlation
