ABSTRACT Research shows increasing deficiencies in writing among students, and diverse theoretical and methodological contributions have been generated about this problem. Although is a much debated topic, we believe it is necessary to bring it into consideration once more, confronting statements and revising proposals. As part of this effort, the present article is structured in two sections, in the first one we make an overview of the conceptions of writing developed by diverse explicative models: product, process, and contextual or ecological; also, we present some didactical implications for each one of them. In the second section, we add some considerations about the teaching of writing, based on the proposals of authors as Cassany (2000), Castelló (2000), Díaz Barriga & Hernández Rojas (2001) and Hernández & Quintero (2001)
