ABSTRACT In this article, an experience in preparing volunteer groups for the staging of major sport events is presented. Specifically, the experience has to do with the recruiting and preparation of the personnel volunteering for carrying out the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The article describes the process the people involved went through while undertaking their preparation and also during their actual performance in the games. It emphasizes the benefits obtained by people, institutions, city and country in which the event may take place. Finally, some general guidelines as to the preparation necessary for personnel in sport-related organizations are advanced and suggestions are made as to the value of this particular experience as a possible model for the carrying out of similar events in the future.
