EL ACHKAR, Soraya. Popular education in human rights: An educational practice for the exercise of citizenship. Rev. Ped [online]. 2009, vol.30, n.87, pp.281-307. ISSN 0798-9792.

In this study we discuss the subject of popular education in human rights through a course given with family members of victims of police abuse, developed from 2000 to 2004, whose general aim was to develop both their faculties of critical judgment in the face of violations of human rights such as their ability to fight against impunity and the conception of acts of solidarity in favor of human dignity. The pedagogical strategy used was that of the literary workshop in which victims could express in writing their emotions, personal histories, experiences, ideas on death, justice, pardon, impunity, law, peace, the State, the poor and criminalization. The texts of the family members of victims were a recreation of the works of classic authors such as Borges, García Lorca, Kafka, Quiroga, Rulfo, Vallejo, Julio Miranda, Arreola, Urbaneja Achelpohl, Rufino Blanco, Ramón Campoamor, Martí, Nazoa, amongst others. The article puts forward our thoughts through a text written by Raquel Aristimuño, mother of Ramon Ernesto Parra, who was killed by the Metropolitan Police in 1995 in a poor district of Caracas. The text was chosen for being representative and meaningful within the framework of the collective experience of those who took part. In the article we present three dimensions of popular education in human rights as a theoretical contribution on the subject: the first is that popular education in human rights is essentially formation for a beginning. The second is that this educational practice is not divorced from moral education and the third is that popular education in human rights is an exercise of comprehension for the exercise of citizenship
