The study of external representations systems used to build language within the framework of a disciplinary fi eld presents the opportunity to study school activities from a semiotic perspective. Thus, we centered our attention on the analysis of pictorial representations (PR) which constitute an important element for the construction of the scientific discourse, which is opaque to students when they read a text with the purpose of learning something from it. Three types of pictorial representations extensively used in the scientific language were characterized: cartesian graphs, tables and structure diagrams
