Resumen

This article verses about the study and analysis of three of JoséÁngel Montero’s (1832-1881) masses. The applied method was based on the usage of existent references about this musical gender that allowed the recognizance of western arrangement tradition’ own elements in them. Montero was an outstanding Venezuelan composer who among other important jobs held as chapel master in Caracas’ Cathedral from 1873 until his death. From approximately more than thirty masses assumingly composed by Montero, were approached Mass No. 6, due to the existence of a diversity of versions, Mass No. 8 due to its extension, number of voices e instruments, and Mass No. 25, because it is transcribed in an assumingly official paper. This work represents a significant contribution to knowledge, for a deeper research and wider diffusion of XIX’s century second half Venezuelan academic music.
